Technology Salute: Meet the Region's Technology Leaders Technology Salute: Meet the Region's Technology Leaders

NATCO, one of the region's long-time technology leaders, encourages growth in tech-driven solutions for businesses, schools and organizations.

By utilizing web-based technology, we now have the ability to publish information and communicate without cutting down trees to do it. By reducing our dependence on paper, we reduce pollution, and help protect our pristine environment which is integral to our quality of life in the South Shore region. In fact, this vision drives NATCO's efforts in charitable donations through the South Shore Foundation. The Foundation values the natural environment as a basis for the South Shore way of life and believes telecommunications can be employed to advance economic opportunity and community betterment.

NATCO, a locally owned company, has long been known as a high tech leader supporting new technology in the region. Some of the region's most popular local websites promote NATCO customers.

In this e-newsletter, we'll feature a spotlight on some of the region's other technology leaders. This issue salutes technology-driven improvements in law enforcement.

Technology Driven Business Salute:
Sheriff Offices of Marion, Boone and Baxter Counties

Ask a neighbor if they've visited the Sheriff's Office lately and they'll probably tell you, yes - online! Check them out at:

www.MarionCountySheriffAR.com
www.BooneSheriff.com
www.BaxterCountySheriff.com

Residents of Marion, Boone and Baxter Counties are improving community policing efforts by visiting and learning about the important work of the local Sheriff Offices. Our area Sheriff Offices are implementing "smart policing" technology to keep residents informed of most wanted suspects, sex offender locations, outstanding warrants and events concerning public safety.

In fact, Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery recently finished in the top three of a national contest sponsored by FOX Television's America's Most Wanted due to overwhelming local online support. The nationally recognized website, produced by local firm Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing, Inc. has drawn much positive publicity to our region.

NATCO is proud that our region has this online resource. It's a great example of how technology (produced and supported by local people) can improve our quality of life.

Vacationing in the South Shore

Vacationing in the South Shore

We expect that a lot of families will be vacationing a little closer to home this year. Luckily, we live in an area of abundant natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Each year thousands of visitors come to the Ozarks to experience our lakes, rivers, mountains and natural attractions. The South Shore area boasts some of the most scenic spots in Arkansas. We'd like to invite you to experience all the wonderful things in your own back yard by vacationing right here in the South Shore area.

The South Shore website: www.SouthShore.com features information and maps for four spectacular driving tours to help you explore the Ozarks. The self-guided driving tours wind through the northern Arkansas Ozarks with its fresh air, pure water resources, and mountain scenery.

These tours include many great stops along the way and area trivia. The tours can be viewed online or printed to take with you as you explore all the South Shore has to offer.

A new addition to the list of area attractions in the South Shore region includes the Ozark Medieval Fortress under construction near Lead Hill.

Ozark Medieval Fortress Opens to Public
Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism - May, 2010 E-Newsletter

The Ozark Medieval Fortress - the first full-scale castle being built on American soil - recently opened near Lead Hill. The structure, begun last fall, is being assembled with quarried stones, timber, forged tools and bare hands using the authentic techniques of the Middle Ages. Construction will be ongoing until its completion in 2030.

The creation is the brainchild of Michel Guyot, who launched a similar project in Burgundy, France, 10 years ago. A team of architectural experts, working with historians of the Middle Ages and dedicated artisans, is raising a genuine, fortified castle with 24-foot high towers, a drawbridge and six-foot thick stone walls. The structure will surround an expansive inner courtyard.

The public is invited to observe the construction and talk with the artisans. Thirty masons, carpenters and stone carvers authentically dressed will work for 20 years - the time required to build a fortress in the Middle Ages. Other working craftsmen include the blacksmith, rope maker, basket weaver, carter, potter, textile worker and wood cutter. They work right in front of visitors and share their knowledge and techniques. For part of each day, the workers will respond to questions from visitors.

The castle is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 1 to Nov. 30. A gift shop and picnic facilities are on-site. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-16 and children 5 and under are free.

The fortress is seeking artisans who can demonstrate medieval life and the importance of their handiwork to the construction of a castle. Volunteers are also needed to become a part of this unique project. For more information about the project, visit www.ozarkmedievalfortress.com or call (870) 436-7625.

NATCO Managers Attend Rural Telephone Conference & Expo NATCO Managers Attend Rural Telephone Conference & Expo

Steven Sanders Jr., President and General Manager and Steve Smith, Business Manager for Northern Arkansas Telephone Company, recently attended training at the IP Possibilities Conference and Expo in St. Louis, Missouri.

The conference, organized by NTCA and OPASTCO, focused on how broadband Internet services are overhauling the way people communicate. The IP Possibilities Conference & Expo brought together the best research and experience the industry has to offer and created a forum specifically for rural telecom executives. The two-day conference provided training and information on a variety of areas, such as Internet-TV, Utilizing Networks for Local Economic Development, and Opportunities in Telemedicine and E-Health.

Specific courses of interest were "Being the Community Technology Partner: Implications for the Rural Operator." This class focused on the role of rural carriers in the communities they serve. "As broadband becomes increasingly critical to an area's economic viability, NATCO's role is becoming even more crucial. I enjoyed exploring how other carriers have leveraged their broadband networks to inject vitality into the local economy," said Sanders.
