South Shore Foundation Helps Marion County Literacy Council with Free Books for Children

Free Books for Children
Marion County Literacy Council Director Betsey Short (at left) and South Shore Foundation Trustee Jodie Jeffrey review books for children available through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library project. For more information, contact Betsey Short at (870) 449-5459 or by e-mail at vista@southshore.com.

The Marion County Literacy Council has received partial funding of a major project, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, through the South Shore Foundation. Trustees of the foundation granted $2,700 to the county literacy council to cover postage to distribute free books to pre-school age children.

Betsey Short, director of the Marion County Literacy Council, said the council now has funds to finance the project for about 200 children in the county under the age of five, but they wish to reach many more. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library project, she explained, enables the literacy council to provide one free book a month to children who otherwise may not receive such a gift.

The project also promotes parent/child communications as parents read to their children. The literacy council has promoted the Imagination Library at public events in Marion County, through pre-schools, Head Starts, elementary schools, and has received higher enrollment than anticipated, Ms. Short said.

South Shore Foundation, the charitable arm of NATCO, makes grants to nonprofit agencies serving the South Shore area. For more information or for a grant application, call 1-800-775-6682, or visit www.southshore.com.

NATCO Provides Extra Directories at Locations Throughout Three Counties

NATCO Provides Extra Directories

When it comes to the Ozark Regional Telephone Directory, you can’t stop with just one, or even one for each of your telephone lines! It is the right one for this area, just the right size and with the right listings for your everyday use at home, at the office, or on the go. As a customer of NATCO or NATCO Tech, you receive one Ozark Regional Directory for each telephone line you have. But, most people can use more than one copy. You may want another copy for your vehicle and another one or two for other locations in your home or business where you use that cordless, walk-around extension.

NATCO has ordered plenty of extras, and you may pick up any number you want from the stands at the following locations in area towns. Oh yes, they are free.

We thank these local businesses and government offices hosting an Ozark Regional Directory stand with extra books for your convenience. Get your extra copies today. Of course, you may also come by NATCO or Yelcot offices for extra copies.

Four Renew South Shore Academic Scholarships for Second Year

Four students who received South Shore Academic Scholarships ($1,000) in 2002 as high school graduates have met all the requirements for renewing the scholarship and receiving another $1,000 grant for their sophomore year. South Shore Foundation congratulates these students: Jessica Dixon (Lead Hill); Nick Sachse (Bergman); Tonia Stokes (Pyatt); and Christina Tate (Flippin).

Jessica Dixon of Lead Hill is attending the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. She has not declared a major yet. Asked what was the best thing about her freshman year, Jessica said the “new experience” of meeting many new people, making new friends, learning a lot of things, and being away from home. Does she have any advice for high school students who are planning to attend college? When they do arrive at college, Jessica says, “Learn everything you can. Go into it with an open mind and be ready and willing to learn.”

Nick Sachse is also attending the University of Central Arkansas at Conway as a biology and pre-medicine student. He works as an R.A., a residence hall assistant overseeing about 36 freshmen boys at Arkansas Hall. He also takes part in intramural sports as time allows - football, softball, soccer, to name a few. Since he is in a position to advise a lot of freshmen on campus, he has some definite ideas about advice to give incoming college students. “People stress out too much. They need to just relax and work things out...go with the flow.” Nick said he found the best thing about his first year in college was the independence.

Tonia Stokes is attending Arkansas Tech University at Russellville where she is majoring in international studies. She would like to work for an international corporation, hoping for lots of work-related travel. Tonia has particularly enjoyed the flexible class scheduling that Arkansas Tech allows, and gives this advice to high school students who will be going to college. “Always attend class and do your homework, even if it is not required.”

Christina Tate is attending the University of Central Arkansas at Conway also. Christina is majoring in accounting for a career in that field. When she was a freshman last year, the best thing was really experiencing campus life by living on campus. Like nearly all non-freshmen students this year, Christina is off-campus because dorm space is full. For high school students looking forward to college, “Work hard in high school and sign up for as many financial aid opportunities as you can, because that will really help.” She advised once the student arrives on campus, “Try to become involved in activities.” She did so as a freshman, but is carrying 18 credit hours this semester and may graduate in less than four years.

Recipients of the South Shore Academic Scholarship have a chance to renew their scholarships for up to four years at $1,000 each year if they maintain a “B” average, attend an Arkansas college or university, and remain a full-time student.

NATCO Donates Truck

NATCO Vice President Steven Sanders Jr. said NATCO donated the vehicle in response to a request from Diamond City about obtaining a used vehicle from NATCO.

ASUMH Awards First South Shore Endowed Scholarship

ASUMH Awards First South Shore Endowed Scholarship
Rita Swafford (at right) of Flippin was selected to be the first recipient of the South Shore Foundation Endowed Scholarship for math, science, and technology at Arkansas State University Mountain Home. Here, she is shown on campus with Karen Wallace, vice chancellor for development. Mrs. Swafford was selected by the ASUMH Scholarship Committee.

The Arkansas State University Mountain Home Scholarship Committee has awarded a newly established scholarship to Rita Swafford of Flippin. Mrs. Swafford is pursuing a degree in Information Systems Technology. The scholarship she received is awarded by the Arkansas State University Foundation through a $100,000 endowment by South Shore Foundation of Flippin. The funds are designated for students who study math, science or technology.

Mrs. Swafford began attending ASUMH last year when she was laid off after working 17 years for the same company. The layoff provided assistance to earn a certificate, which Mrs. Swafford completed. She is married to Tim Swafford, has one son, Billy Endres, and one grandchild.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must reside in Baxter, Marion, or Boone counties and be enrolled in a math, science or technology program or in education to teach math, science, or technology. The scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters. For more information about the South Shore Endowed Scholarship, contact the ASUMH Financial Aid Office.

Spotlight on Long Distance Savings - Rural Saver Plan
Plan Cuts Long Distance Rate to 2.1¢ Per Minute

The Rural Saver Plan has been expanded and improved to provide greater savings to residential customers. As of October 1, 2003, the $2.50 flat monthly fee doubles the minutes allowed from 60 to 120. That makes the rate just 2.1¢ per minute. If you currently subscribe to the Rural Saver Plan, your minutes will automatically increase to 120 minutes.

This new, lower rate includes all calls within a 41-mile circle of your local call center. That 41-mile call center does not cross state lines or the boundaries of your local toll area. NATCO Customer Service can supply you with the boundaries of the 41-mile circle when you call us toll free at 1-800-775-6682.

This $2.50/month Rural Saver Plan can be used along with any other optional calling plan you have through NATCO.

The Rural Saver Plan is often used by customers who want to save money when calling their county seat and other nearby communities at a discounted rate.

Contact NATCO to take advantage of the Rural Saver Plan savings.

Scenes from 2003 Business After Hours and Open House

NATCO and NATCO Technologies customers took advantage of the Open House and Technology Showcase on September 18 to talk in person with NATCO employees about telephone and Internet services.

Customers had some “hands-on” time with telecom services at the Open House.

Customers registered for (and won) prizes and enjoyed refreshments.

The event was combined with a Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce “Business After Hours” offering business people a chance to see what services NATCO Technologies offers. If you didn’t make it to the Open House and “Business After Hours,” come see us next time!
