Spotlight on Digital Services

If you use one or more of NATCO's digital services at home or in your business, NATCO News would like to shine a spotlight your way. In this and future issues we will spotlight ISDN, ADSL, Centrex from NATCO, or Web sites. Let others see how NATCO's telecommunications services can be used to their advantage. To share your successes, call Steven Sanders Jr. at NATCO, 453-8811 ext. 273, or call Jodie Jeffrey-Sanders at Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing, Inc. in Mountain Home, 425-8064.

Reminder to Recycle

When your new Ozark Regional Directory arrives in late August, don't forget to take advantage of NATCO's free service of recycling your old phone directories. Just bring any outdated directory to one of the 11 drop-off locations in our service area (See the Recycle Phone Books article for addresses and recycling hours), and NATCO will recycle the directories for our customers. Place the old directories in the barrels labeled with the universal recycling logo and the NATCO company logo.

This year, NATCO would like to welcome Bank of Yellville locations as recycling drop-off points, and we'd like to thank the business owners that have continued to participate in the recycling project, some for all seven years.

Marion County Library Fund Raisers Meet Challenge

Marion County Library has nearly completed a 1,200 square foot addition and other building improvements, financed with donations from area individuals and businesses and two charitable foundations, one of which is NATCO's South Shore Foundation.

Names of donors of at least $250 are engraved on bricks that will be placed permanently on an exterior stucco wall, according to Karen Campbell, library board chairwoman. One of those bricks says South Shore Foundation, in honor of a $25,000 "challenge grant" approved by the Foundation's Board of Trustees.

Kay Clark, chairwoman of the library building fund committee, said contributions from 47 donors totaled $30,217.39, an amount which exceeded the requirements of the $25,000 challenge grant by the South Shore Foundation.

The Marion County Library received an initial grant of $10,000 from the Madelyne M. and Edward C. McCarty Foundation, headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The late Mr. McCarty was originally from Marion County, and the foundation that bears his name supports needs in Marion County. The foundation also supports projects in Mrs. McCarty's home area of Union County.

Then, in response to a grant application, trustees of the South Shore Foundation promised to match any amount of donations up to $25,000, and did so in February. The McCarty Foundation again provided funds toward the challenge. The second donation for $7,748.89 was earmarked for roof repair which was an unexpected expense in the building plans.

This is the new addition, nearly done except for the bricks
which will be put into place by Richard Eifert of Harrison.

The building project includes the 1,200 square-foot expansion, roof repair, a new cooling unit, and modifications to provide handicap access. Total cost of the improvements was $145,000, with $80,000 allocated from county library tax revenues.

Library Board members are: Karen Campbell, Cam Semelsberger, David Doshier, Larry Evans, and Annette Pettit. Library Building Fund Committee members are: Kay Clark, Susan Duren, and Nancy Martin.

NATCO President Steven G. Sanders chairs the board of trustees of the South Shore Foundation. For more information or to receive a grant application, call 870-453-3333.

Spotlight on ISDN:
Fairview physician stays medically connected at home with ISDN

Dr. Cogburn is angling for lunker trout near "Cogburn's Stump" in the White River

Dr. Bob Cogburn, a cancer specialist, lives near the White River in Fairview and has his medical practice 22 miles away in Mountain Home, yet he will have easy access to medical records about his patients at home. That is because he has ISDN phone service from NATCO at home.

For this doctor, it is a necessity to have reliable medical information at his fingertips at all times. For instance, by calling up a patient's medical records by phone, Dr. Cogburn will know what medication a patient is taking at what dosages. Dr. Cogburn will be able to make notes about patient treatment when he is at home, or he can use the records as a reference if a patient needs to speak with him after regular office hours.

"This is an ideal way of keeping track of what happens when you are not at the office," he stated.

ISDN is a multi-channel telephone line that expands service to include fax, Internet or data transmission through one physical phone line. NATCO has offered national ISDN for five years, pioneering its offering in the state of Arkansas.

High-speed ISDN service also provides Dr. Cogburn with rapid access to multiple Web sites he uses for reference, including those of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, National Institutes of Health, and American Cancer Society. He also relies upon the CD-Rom versions of medical reference books such as the Physician's Desk Reference, a guide to medications.

Dr. Cogburn's next step in tele-medicine may be transmission of X-rays using his ISDN line to view X-rays at home. He said he has not taken that step yet because of the limitations in scanner designs. He does foresee a time when the medical records system will become "completely paperless" a step that will improve documentation, making it ironclad, he said.

Before moving to this area late last year, Dr. Cogburn was in private practice as an oncologist and hematologist in Little Rock. Originally from Fort Smith, he practiced medicine in the Air Force at both Wright-Patterson USAF Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and USAF Hospital, Hill AFB, Utah. He enjoys the more relaxed pace of life here, as compared to Little Rock, and he values working in what he describes as a "top notch medical community" in the Mountain Home area. Dr. Cogburn and his wife Beverly like to camp and fish in our beautiful Arkansas, and he pursues a wide array of hobbies ranging from music to botany.

Cogburn Cancer Clinic is located at 500 Coley Drive in Mountain Home, telephone 870-425-5354.

Spotlight on Web Sites Hosted by NATCO Technologies:
Mike and Betty Scrima of Black Oak Resort

Mike and Betty Scrima of Black Oak Resort at Oakland credit their Web site with attracting more customers year by year. "The first season, we got 7 or 8 vacation trips, then the next year, 16, then it just quadrupled for the past two years," Mike says.

The Web site is now such an important factor in their promotional package that they are going to quit attending the Chicago sport, boat, and travel show. They no longer need to go. "I'll take the money we'd spend and put some of it on the Web site."

The Scrimas have had their own business Web site hosted by NATCO Technologies for four years. With a background in data processing prior to buying a resort and moving here, both Mike and Betty had written computer programs. Mike also worked on analysis, projects management, and systems design.

Still, Mike says, he and Betty chose to hire a professional firm with experience in the field to do the Web site creation instead of tackling it themselves. He would advise others to do the same. "Contract someone to do it for you, instead of doing a home-grown Web site," is his strong belief. Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing, Inc., a NATCO Technologies partner, designed the Black Oak Resort Web site. The address is www.blackoakresort.com.

Mike and Betty are proud of their site and are always working to improve it. They think their own Web site is "outstanding" with complete information for potential vacationers. A key step, Mike says, is to envision how people will be using the Web site when they are at home. He and Betty wanted the Web user to be able to ask questions by e-mail and make reservations by e-mail, as well as know the rates and see photographs of all aspects of the resort.

Mike took the Webalizer course - free to NATCO Technologies Web site customers - to discover how Web users are finding out about the Black Oak Web site. Depending upon what he learns, he may make some changes in the way their materials are presented. "The new reporting system is outstanding," he says. Mike and Betty compliment the assistance they have received from Mark Morris on Web site questions. "Mark took the time to go over it with me." Morris works in the Internet department at NATCO Partner Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing.

NATCO Technologies hosts Web sites for businesses, organizations, or individuals located anywhere in the United States. Being the first area Internet Service Provider to support virtual domains, NATCO Technologies can provide distinctive Web site and e-mail addresses.

Get Web-a-lized... It's Free

Did you ever think about the meaning of the word "realize"? The "ize" ending on the word "real" leads to this dictionary meaning - "to make real."

So, what does Webalize mean? A possible definition could be "to interpret the Web."

If you would like some very interesting and useful information out of your Web site, then consider attending a Webalizer Class. They are free to those who have a Web site hosted on the NATCO Technologies server and are held on weekday afternoons at NATCO Partner Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing in Mountain Home. The purpose is to introduce Web site owners to the electronic, statistical analysis available to those who have a virtual domain.

Customers not in Mountain Home may "attend" the class via tele-conference. This is limited to one person per class.

The class will teach Web site owners how to access statistics on the number of visits occurring on their Web sites, what days and times the visits occur and much more.

Sample charts from the Webalizer class

For instance, in this chart, usage of this demo site is much higher in the Spring season than in the summer. Further breakdowns are available to pinpoint high usage times. This information could be a tremendous help to businesses planning promotions or events.

To attend a future Webalizer class, call Tim at Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing, Inc., 870-425-8064

Learning more about their Web sites
Taking advantage of a free class, business owner Mike Scrima of Black Oak Resort at Oakland and Kathleen Hackett, sales and marketing coordinator of Cloud 9 Sleep Shop in Mountain Home, use the Webalizer program to find statistics about traffic to their Web sites. Showing the way is Tim Green of Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing, Inc.

New home for NATCO partner, Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing
Internet customers will be interested to learn that Brooks-Jeffrey Marketing, Inc. has moved from its former Coley Drive address in Mountain Home to 19 Medical Plaza (the former White River Orthopaedics building).  To reach the building, follow Hospital Drive to Buttercup; turn left between attorney Frank Bailey's office and Kirby-Boaz Funeral Directors; then turn onto Medical Plaza.  BJM is the first building on the right.
